Careers in Tax
At RSM, we have a variety of pathways you could take to start your career in tax. Each will provide the opportunity for you to gain professional qualifications. 

A career in tax is more than just becoming a tax adviser, you’ll be part of Team Tax, diving into the intricate world of tax laws, both in the UK and internationally, applying them into real-life solutions for our clients, help clients save money, mitigate tax risks, navigate the complex landscape of reporting requirements and help create value.  

VAT / Indirect tax

VAT is a tax on the sale of a product or service which affects nearly every business transaction in over 150 countries. The case law and regulations relating to VAT are constantly evolving, making it an area of significant importance to our clients. You will always be learning new rules and understanding how they apply both in the UK and internationally, making it a dynamic and exciting field to work in. 

You will study through the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) to become a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA).

Employer solutions

As part of our employer solutions tax team, you’ll advise companies on one of the most important parts of their business: people. Attracting and retaining the best talent is vital to business success, so we work closely with our clients to help them navigate the complexities of UK and global employment tax rules and advise them on the most effective ways to reward and incentivise their people. As you grow with us, you’ll get to work with HR and finance teams or even the most senior executives globally. 

You will study through the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) to become a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA). 

Private client services

Our private client tax team works closely with a huge variety of interesting clients, helping them navigate the complexities of UK and international tax rules that impact their personal tax position. As you build your skills as an adviser, you’ll get the opportunity to work directly with clients. 

In your first year, you’ll focus your training on the foundations of our private client services (tax return compliance) with opportunities to diversify into tax advisory services later on. 

You will study through the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) to become a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA). 

Capital allowances 

The capital allowances team is a part of the corporate tax team and helps our clients optimise the tax relief they get when they spend money on qualifying fixed assets, such as equipment in their factory. As part of this team, you’ll visit company sites and develop client relationships. 

You will study through the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) to become a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) and/or member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). 

Corporate tax

Our corporate tax team works with organisations of all sizes in lots of different sectors. From fast-growing privately owned technology businesses to multinational groups listed on the London Stock Exchange, you’ll help your clients meet complex reporting requirements and understand the ever-shifting UK and global tax landscape. 

You’ll begin by learning the foundations of UK tax compliance before beginning to work closely with clients. 

As a school leaver you’ll will study the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) followed by the Association of Chartered Accountants (ACA) qualification through the ICAEW. The CTA is optional in the future.  

As a Graduate, you’ll study towards the ACA qualification through the ICAEW and CTA is optional in the future. 

For students in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you’ll study through Institute of Chartered Accountants Scotland (ICAS) or Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI) respectively.  


Transfer pricing

Transfer pricing is another part of our corporate tax team. You’ll be part of a national team that advises multinational clients on how to price products, services, assets and financing between the companies in their group. 

This team works with clients to understand their business, provide practical solutions and explain complex technical concepts clearly and effectively. It means understanding and keeping up with a rapidly changing international tax system alongside colleagues from across our network of specialist global transfer pricing professionals. 

You will study for an Association of Chartered Accountants (ACA) qualification followed by an optional transfer pricing paper of an Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (ADIT) or for the full ADIT qualification if preferred.

Innovation and creative sector reliefs  

The innovation reliefs team is a subset of the corporate tax team which helps UK corporate clients save on tax (or even receive cash from the government) through tax relief for money a company invests in cutting-edge research and development, uses to register new patents or through video games and other creative sector developments.  

You’ll gain exposure to some of the latest developments in science and technology across all industries, and work with a number of different businesses.
